Kenitra was founded by Marshal Lyautey in 1912, under the French protectorate. It was formerly called Port-Lyautey until the Independence in 1956. During the II World War, was a disembark base of 9000 American soldiers.

The port of Kenitra is the only one in a river in Morocco, on the river Sebú. It has commercial and fishing activity. With  1000 m of quay and a draft of 5,4 m of fresh water.
